Resource: Susan Barton and Bright Solutions

Written by: Jamie Bessette

This week I’d like to introduce you to Susan Barton. She is the creator of the Barton Reading & Spelling program. I first learned about her at a reading conference about 15 years ago as I attended one of her sessions. During that presentation she provided so much information in a manner that was easy to understand I was instantly a fan. Since that day I have shared her message and introduced people I work with to her resources as often as reading concerns are brought up. I have held staff development sessions where we go through her videos and learn how to use her system. I’ve worked with parents who want to use this system themselves or with their tutor. I have recommended and bought the levels for school districts I’ve worked with and I personally own many of the levels. I can’t speak highly enough about this system.

While you have to buy each level separately and they are a bit expensive, on her websites she shares a bunch of training and resources that are free for you to print or use. The place to start to learn about dyslexia is: Bright Solutions for Dyslexia: https://www.dys-add.com/index.html Here you also find training videos and dyslexia resources. She shares a ton of information that you can access for free and you can sign up for a newsletter that she emails to you. Some of the videos are long but well worth watching. I frequently use this website as reference for the work I do.

If you are interested in buying her program you can go here: Barton Reading & Spelling System: https://bartonreading.com/ This site has information about her program and how to become certified as a Barton Tutor. You do not have to be certified to use her system. She does track who buys which levels to make sure you do not skip any because level 1 lays the groundwork for level 2 and so on. She wants to ensure you don't start middle, catch my drift? Each level comes with it’s own set of training videos and it is meant to be parent friendly. My experience is that it is parent friendly. It's also a great resource for teachers who do not know much about dyslexia.

If you are a teacher I encourage you to bookmark her and educate yourself with the wealth of information she had to offer. WHile you might not buy or use her system the information you will learn will help you to become a more knowledgeable reading teacher.
