Today I’d like to bring up Ross Greene. I have to say I am a huge fan of his so this may seem partial, and it is; that’s my disclaimer. Now onto the meat. Ross Greene has written a number of books which I think are good knowledge for teachers and parents to have in their toolbox. If you are interested in reading them you can search The Explosive Child and Lost at School. Those should head you in the direction of his work.
The part of his work that I decided to post about today is his website. https://www.livesinthebalance.org/ Here you can find all sorts of free resources on working with kids who have challenging behavior. He discusses his approach- Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) and offers videos to teach the process.
If you ever hear him speak (I have a few times) he’ll tell you this can be done with all ages of children. My poor children, while they do not have challenging behaviors, (or maybe they would have if I hadn’t used this approach… I’ll never know…) they are the offspring of an educator and by default get to be guinea pigs for every educational practice I am interested in learning more about, they are, for lack of a better term, they are my dress rehearsal. My reasoning….Shouldn’t it work on my kids if I’m going to use it on your kids?
I began using CPS right about the time my daughter was hitting her terrible 2’s and haven’t stopped. I’ve used it on both my own kids and kids I work with at school. I find that this model supports kids independence and decision making while creating positive behaviors.
That’s all I'll say as I don’t want to sway your judgement too much. I encourage you to look through the website and discover some new skills.
Here is the link if you need it again. Happy surfing!
